Funnel clouds spotted near Cottage Grove, Northfield

The National Weather Service says that funnel clouds were spotted near Cottage Grove and just to the south of Northfield at 11:30 a.m. Monday, but no tornado watches or warnings have been issued.

The Twin Cities area may see funnel clouds throughout the afternoon, but the National Weather Service says the clouds are unlikely to produce tornadoes.

National Weather Service meteorologist Rick Hiltbrand said these types of funnel clouds usually don't develop into tornados, but if they do, they would be weak and brief, and wouldn't pose much of a danger.

The funnel clouds are part of a band of showers stretching from New Richmond, Wisc. through Northfield to near Blue Earth, Minn.

The National Weather Service reports that more funnel clouds are possible as the showers drift slowly to the west.
