Bachmann to create "tea party" caucus

A U.S. House Committee has given Republican U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann the go ahead to form a House "tea party" caucus.

Bachmann represents Minnesota's 6th District, but like former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, she's become a national favorite of tea party enthusiasts. Her staff said she was traveling and unavailable to talk about the new tea party caucus, but said she'll be encouraging Republicans and Democrats to join to help promote constitutional principles.

Bachmann's Washington spokesman said another Bachmann staffer will handle caucus business in addition to other duties.

That spokesman said it's unclear exactly what the caucus will do, but added that it will likely be a place for members to share ideas and hear from speakers.

The spokesman said House rules strictly prohibit such caucuses from participating in any campaign activities.

Democrats accuse Bachmann of neglecting her Minnesota constituents in favor of courting national audience. Bachmann said the people she represents appreciate her outspoken opposition to the growth in government.
