Red Lake couple convicted of abusing child

After a four-day trial, a federal jury in Duluth has convicted a Red Lake couple of abusing their baby.

Charles William Prentice, Jr., 26, was found guilty last week on one count of aggravated assault and one count of child endangerment. Showy Shalette Johnson, 25, was convicted on one count of child endangerment.

According to evidence at trial, the baby was brought to the emergency room at the Indian Health Services Hospital in Red Lake for a broken arm in November 2008. Follow-up medical care showed the child had multiple fractures in various stages of healing.

Prentice faces a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, and Johnson faces a potential maximum of five years in prison.

A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
