Minn. online job ads up; Midwest economic growth slows

Minnesota's economy saw a spike in demand for workers last month and a much-watched manufacturing index fell slightly, though it still points to economic expansion in the state.

The number of online ads for jobs in Minnesota jumped by a hefty 7,300 between June and July. The total number of advertised vacancies reached 85,600 last month, according to the Conference Board. The New York-based research firm says demand for workers nationally has "settled into a more modest pattern over the last six months."

Separately, the Business Conditions Index for the mid-America region also indicates economic growth in the central U.S. is moderating. The Minnesota index dipped down in July, but still suggests improving economic conditions for manufacturers in the months ahead.

It also points to job growth similar to what the state experienced in the first half of the year. The report said economic signals from businesses across the state remain positive.
