Chemical mix sickens Eagan hotel employees

Six hotel employees in Eagan were taken to the hospital after becoming sick from a toxic mix of chemicals.

The fumes caused an evacuation of the Crowne Plaza Hotel Friday morning. None of the guests became ill, but reported smelling a chlorine-like gas in the lobby.

Eagan Fire Chief Mike Scott says an employee mixed two laundry chemicals and created a toxic gas called phosgene which can result in respiratory problems and even death.

Most of the Crowne Plaza's 59 guests were not at the hotel when it was evacuated. Scott says five of the six employees were treated and released while one will be held overnight for observation
