St. Paul plays host to "geek" conference

Self-described "geeky girls" are gathering at the Science Museum of Minnesota Saturday for the "She's Geeky unConference."

The meeting is for technologically-minded women. There are sessions on everything from entrepreneurship and creating a business budget, to one titled "going from geek to glamorous" that features makeovers.

This is the first time the "She's Geeky" gathering isn't being held on the East or West coast. Twin Cities resident Jacqueline Urick lobbied to bring the event to Minnesota.

"I'm often one of the few women in the room at these tech conferences but I know there's other women out there that are interested in the same things so I wanted a space where we could bring people together," Urick said.

Urick encourages women to bring their daughters to the conference, and said all hobbies are welcome.

"It's whatever you think is geeky. If it's science, if it's making spreadsheets -- we have a woman here who's a knitter and she gets excited about specific kinds of complex knitting patterns and stuff like that. Whatever it is that makes you think you're a geek -- come here and embrace it," she said.

Urick said she hopes this is just the first of many "She's Geeky" events in Minnesota.
