Iowa city resigned to bottled water after floods

Residents of Ames, Iowa, are lining up for bottled water because burst water mains caused by heavy flooding have rendered the city's tap water unsafe to drink.

City officials set up five water distribution sites Thursday. They are urging residents to use as little tap water as possible until eight broken water lines can be repaired. Three days of powerful storms in Iowa caused heavy flooding in Ames and other cities on Wednesday.

Hundreds of residents have had to leave their homes in Ames, Des Moines and Colfax, and a girl, 16, was killed when a flooded creek swept her car off a road near Des Moines.

Ames' drinking water likely won't be available until early next week.
