A 21-year-old St. Paul man will be sentenced Friday in the killing of a Maplewood police officer.

Joshua Martin has pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting intentional second-degree murder in the killing of Sgt. Joseph Bergeron. Martin also pleaded guilty to kidnapping in a carjacking attempt earlier the same day. He faces a prison term of 35 1/2 years when he is sentenced Friday.

Martin testified that he and his friend, 21-year-old Jason Jones, came across Bergeron in his squad car May 1 after the attempted carjacking. Martin says Jones shot and killed the officer, who was belted into his car seat.

Jones was killed later in a manhunt when he assaulted another officer, who shot him.
