New Wis. recycling law affects Minnesota residents

A new Wisconsin law aimed at pulling recyclable and possibly toxic electronic waste out of landfills will also affect a lot of Minnesota residents.

Part of the law, which took effect in January, requires manufacturers to collect and recycle most electronics from Wisconsin residents and schools.

But another part of the law banning most electronics from Wisconsin landfills and incinerators takes effect Sept. 1.

The Duluth News Tribune reports the new law effects Minnesota because trash from the North Shore, Duluth and Carlton County ends up at the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District in Duluth, and then is trucked to Superior's Moccasin Mike Landfill.
