Officials in Mankato have announced the city will be the location of a new Walmart Midwest Distribution Center.
City officials say construction of the distribution center is expected to begin sometime in the next five years.
The center will be located on a 150-acre parcel on Mankato's northeast side. It's projected to become one of the top five taxpayers for the city.
Mankato City Manager Pat Hentges said the center will also create between 500 and 700 new jobs, as well as several hundred other spin-off jobs, like trucking.
"They're saying this is a priority and this is the site and Mankato represents the hole in the Midwest that they have distribution-wise," he said.
Hentges said the site will be a produce distribution site for several upper-Midwest states.
