Researcher might again seek laws to protect collared bears

Despite pleas to hunters by researchers and others not to shoot radio-collared bears, at least three have been killed in northern Minnesota this season.

Researcher Lynn Rogers says he might again pursue state legislation that would make it illegal for hunters to shoot bears with collars. Rogers studies bears through his Wildlife Research Institute near Ely. One of the 14 collared bears in his study program is presumed dead after someone anonymously dropped off a collar at the DNR mailbox in Tower Tuesday.

The Duluth News Tribune says the DNR had 35 radio-collared bears, but lost two of them to hunters this season.

Minnesota's bear season opened Sept. 1 and continues through Oct. 17.
