Portions of I-35E closed this weekend for bridge removal

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will close several miles of Interstate 35E near the northern suburbs of Little Canada and Vadnais Heights on Saturday and Sunday.

The closed section starts at 694 and extends north to near Forest Lake. MnDOT spokesman Kent Barnard said both north and south segments of 35E will be closed. Barnard expects the major detour routes, which include 35W, will likely experience very heavy traffic.

"We are expecting it's going to be congested this weekend, especially if we have some nice weather with people trying to get out of town," Barnard said. "[Interstate] 35W could become a stop and go situation for us on the weekend."

The weekend 35E closure will allow crews to remove a bridge over the freeway.
