Chemical leak on I-94 sends 3 to hospital

Three people were taken to a hospital Tuesday after a chemical leak on Interstate 94 in St. Paul.

St. Paul Fire District Chief Stan Jadwinski says a leaking 300-pound tank pulled in front of two women who had been on the roadside because their car had broken down.

He says the tank had a crack and was leaking sodium bisulfate.

Firefighters decontaminated the truck driver and paramedics took him to a hospital to be checked out after he inhaled the chemical.

Jadwinski says paramedics also brought the women to a hospital because they had mild respiratory issues.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that firefighters were called to I-94 eastbound, east of U.S. 61, about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Officials used soda ash to absorb the chemical.
