Man shot by police in St. Cloud standoff charged

A man shot and critically wounded by police during an August standoff in St. Cloud is now charged with assault.

Frank James Bammert, 25, was in a wheelchair at Friday's court appearance.

The St. Cloud Times reports bail was set at $1 million. Bammert was taken to Oak Park Heights state prison, which has a medical unit. His next court appearance is set for Oct. 20.

Bammert is accused of firing at police during the Aug. 14 standoff. It began when Bammert allegedly fired gunshots inside his apartment and from the street outside.

The standoff ended when Waite Park police Officer Todd Weeres shot Bammert three times. The Stearns County Attorney's office said Friday that Weeres' use of deadly force was justified, and the officer won't be charged. The officer earlier returned to duty.
