Solar energy helps power convention center

The power switch has been flipped on what will become the largest solar farm in Minnesota. The farm will cover the space of two and a-half football fields. And it's being built far from the farm fields, in fact right in downtown Minneapolis.

More than 2,600 solar panels on the roof of the Minneapolis Convention Center will provide about five percent of the power for the building.

Much of the $3 million project is being funded by Xcel Energy's Renewable Development Fund.

KARE-TV says convention center marketers are already working on plans to use the solar system as a tool to attract green businesses.
