Restaurant forced to cancel voting discount
It seemed harmless enough. A St. Paul restaurant planned to offer a 25 percent discount for customers wearing an "I Voted" sticker on Tuesday, Election Day.
Highland Grill operator Stephanie Shimp says they wanted to celebrate patriotism and democracy with the voting discount. But, the Minnesota Secretary of State's Office warned her against offering a voting discount.
Department legal adviser Bert Black says doing so could be a violation of federal election law which bars financial incentives for voting.
Shimp tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the promotion has been amended. Now, anyone who says "Happy Election Day" can get the discount.
