Fewer state offices to offer new driver's licenses

State officials said Friday that they will reduce the number of offices offering new driver's licenses to comply with new federal passport regulations.

People applying for driver's licenses, instruction permits and IDs will no longer be able to get them at 24 of the state's 135 driver's license offices starting Tuesday.

The offices that offer passport services will continue to do so, and those offices will still be able to process renewals and duplicate driver's licenses or state IDs.

State Department officials have told state officials that U.S. passports, first time driver's licenses, instruction permits and ID cards can no longer be processed in the same office.

Most locations that will continue to offer passport services are near offices still processing new driver's licenses, instruction permits and IDs.

The Department of Public Safety said an updated list of which services are offered where will be available on the department's website by Tuesday.
