DPS: Despite warm temps, winter is coming

Despite unseasonably warm temperatures in recent days, the state Department of Public Safety wants to remind Minnesotans that winter is on the way.

It's Winter Hazard Awareness Week. And DPS officials say staying informed could be the key to having a good, safe winter.

DPS says that over the last 10 years, 40 people have drowned in Minnesota after breaking through thin ice. And last year alone, 19 people died in snowmobile accidents.

Minnesotans can learn how thick the ice needs to be to safely hold a human - or check out other winter survival facts - at the Winter Hazard Awareness Week website.

Information is organized by topic. And there is an online photo contest.

DPS says the website gives citizens a new look at winter, and it could save lives.
