The Scott County Historical Society honored veterans with a luminary display in Stans Garden in Shakopee, Minn., on Veterans Day, Thursday, Nov. 11, 2010.
Kathy Klehr, the director of the Scott County Historical Society, organized the Veterans Day luminary in downtown Shakopee, Minn. "I'm a pacifist," said Klehr. "But hearing the stories of veterans has opened my eyes to all the sacrifices individuals in the service made. And that sacrifice is still going on. So I just had to do something to acknowledge that."
Members of the public were invited to decorate bags for the luminary to honor friends or loved ones who served or are serving in the United States military.
Jordan Girtz, a senior at Shakopee High School, volunteered to help set up the luminary display. Earlier this year, Girtz enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, and "for Veterans Day I wanted to do something to honor those who went before me."
The Veterans Day luminary display in Shakopee's Stans Garden was made up of 100 decorated paper bags, each with a lit votive candle inside. Some honored those currently serving in the military. Others acknowledged veterans who have died.
