St. Paul school board member steps down

A member of the St. Paul School Board is stepping down to run a new nonprofit education organization.

Vallay Varro has been on the St. Paul School Board member for a year. She was elected to fill the remaining years of Tom Conlon's term after he stepped down.

Now, Varro is stepping down with a year left on her term, so she can head up a new statewide nonprofit called MinnCAN, the Minnesota Campaign for Achievement Now. In a statement, she said it wouldn't be fair to stay on the board, given how much time she'll have to dedicate to the new job.

Her departure takes effect in two weeks. The St. Paul School Board will then appoint someone to fill Varro's seat for the remaining year of her term.

Varro is the second Twin Cities school board member to step down this year to run an education-themed nonprofit. Pam Costain left the Minneapolis board in June to head up a group called Achieve Minneapolis.
