Snowstorm brings several inches to parts of Minn.

A snowstorm is causing slick roads across much of central and southern Minnesota. Snowfall across the southwest part of the state has reached several inches, with 7 inches reported in Mankato as of 8 p.m.

The snowfall caused major traffic problems in the Twin Cities metro area during Friday evening's rush hour.

Near Shakopee, KARE-TV reports a bus carrying the Holy Family Catholic junior varsity hockey team nearly careened off the road. No one was hurt.

A Delta Air Lines jet slipped off the runway at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport Friday evening as a result of the snowstorm.

Metropolitan Airports Commission spokeswoman Melissa Scovronski says the plane had landed and was taxiing to the gate when its right main wheel slid into a grassy area about 7:20 p.m. Friday. No one was hurt.

The plane from Atlanta was carrying 189 passengers.

Scovronski says airport crews laid down sand and dug out the jet's wheel. It taxied to the gate about 8:30 p.m.

Then shortly after 9 p.m., a deicing truck clipped the wing of a Mesaba flight that was on a deicing pad awaiting departure to Knoxville, Tenn. Scovronski says that plane also made its way back to the gate and its 22 passengers deplaned.

In the Twin Cities metro area, snow has been falling all evening. Four to six inches is expected to fall by morning, according to MPR meterologist Paul Huttner, and four to eight inches southwest of the metro.

"Paralleling the Minnesota River from Wilmar to New Prague, down to Northfield and Owatonna, even into the Rochester area," said Huttner. "Expect difficult travel, roads in poor condition overnight. It looks like the snow will taper off sometime early on Saturday."

Up to six inches of snow is possible in the metro area by Saturday morning, and higher amounts are expected in the southern and western parts of Minnesota. Snow should taper off by early Saturady morning, according to Huttner.

Winter storm advisories and warnings have been posted for much of the state.
