Exam ordered for man shot in St. Cloud standoff

A judge has ordered a mental competency exam for a 25-year-old man shot by police during a standoff in St. Cloud last August.

An attorney for Frank Bammert says the injuries Bammert suffered when he was shot make him incapable of assisting in his defense.

Bammert is charged with two counts of first-degree assault for an incident Aug. 14 at his St. Cloud apartment. He is accused of firing several rounds at officers who responded after witnesses reported that Bammert was firing shots outside the apartment.

Bammert suffered a brain injury when he was shot twice in the head and once in the neck by a Waite Park police officer during the standoff.
