Fargo developing ordinance to protect trees

City commissioners in Fargo have decided to develop a tree preservation ordinance.

The Forum reports that discussions started earlier this fall when several commissioners raised concerns about developers removing a grove of mature trees in a southwest Fargo addition. Commissioner Brad Wimmer says a policy needs to be put in place.

City Forester Scott Liudahl says developing an ordinance will take some time. He says forestry, planning and park staff will need to categorize and prioritize what types of trees are important to preserve, and decide how the city will administer and enforce the ordinance.
