Federal wolf protection removal suit may slow down
A Minnesota lawsuit seeking to remove federal protections from wolves may be delayed several months.
Aitkin cattle farmer Dale Lueck and Attorney Gerald Tyler of Ely filed the suit to force a delisting of upper-Great Lakes wolves from the federal endangered species list -- something done by the feds twice, but reversed in court.
The suit was joined by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and three sporting organizations. Arguments are scheduled in Minneapolis next Thursday.
However, the Fish and Wildlife Service announced it would soon offer another formal delisting proposal, to be effective late this year.
Duluth Federal Magistrate Leo Brisbois this week asked the parties to agree to a temporary stay so the case would not interfere with the delisting process.
Attorney Gerald Tyler says they are trying to do that and may be able to announce an agreement on Friday.
