Opening of charter school in north Minneapolis delayed

This fall's opening of a charter school in north Minneapolis is being delayed a year.

Minneapolis College Prep was to open to ninth-graders this fall in the old Lincoln School building on the north side.

Board chair Russell Mosley said that's being delayed a year so school leaders can interact more with people in the community.

"They knew it was a rigorous high school, but they didn't really understand the basis of the value it brings to community," Mosley said. "Rather then spending a couple months outreaching to the community, we wanted to make sure we could engage with the community and get some feedback."

Minneapolis College Prep is one of two charter high schools being planned that are associated with a network of charters in Chicago, called Noble.

Mosley said there's no timeline yet for the other school in south Minneapolis. The Minneapolis School District is sponsoring both schools. It won't run the schools but will have certain oversight responsibilities.
