Burnsville man charged in fatal shooting

A Burnsville man is charged with second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of a man during a football game.

Forty-six-year-old Robert Michael Thomas appeared in Dakota County Court on Tuesday. The shooting happened at Thomas' home on Sunday.

Police say 38-year-old James Koenig was shot and killed with a shotgun. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports the men were watching football before a fight broke out, but the game was not the cause.

WCCO-TV reports that according to the complaint, Koenig's girlfriend said Koenig and Thomas were drinking vodka out of coffee cups when an argument started and Thomas told Koenig to leave.

After Koenig refused, Thomas allegedly came back with a shotgun and pulled the trigger when Koenig started coming toward him.

Thomas' next court date is Feb. 8.
