DNR sets forum on chronic wasting disease

The Department of Natural Resources will hold a public meeting to discuss chronic wasting disease in southeastern Minnesota.

It's set for next Monday, Feb. 14, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Pine Island High School cafeteria.

DNR staff will outline what they've learned since the disease was confirmed last month in a deer shot by an archer last November. It was the first time the disease has been found in a wild deer in Minnesota.

Experts from the DNR, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health and the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association will be present to answer questions.

CWD is a fatal brain disease that affects deer, elk and moose, but not cattle or humans. It was also found in a captive elk herd near Pine Island in 2009.
