Jury convicts prof of failing to file tax returns

A Hamline University law professor has been convicted of failing to file state tax returns for 2004 through 2007.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Robin Magee, who will be sentenced April 1, is not expected to spend time in jail. She told investigators she did not understand tax law.

Magee originally faced felony charges, which were dropped when prosecutors determined she did not purposely try to avoid paying her taxes. A jury convicted her of gross misdemeanors.

A Department of Revenue investigator testified that Magee has a "long-term pattern" of not filing returns, having failed to do so from 1991 to 2003 as well. In those years, the state filed "commissioner-filed returns." Attorneys argued whether or not Magee was still required to file returns.
