Picking university regents is politically contentious

State legislators will elect four University of Minnesota Regents today during a joint session of the House and Senate. Regent selections traditionally prompt partisan complaints, and this year is no different.

There's already plenty of partisan bickering underway at the Capitol following last week's release of Gov. Mark Dayton's budget proposal. The Democratic governor's plan to erase a projected $6.2 billion state budget deficit gets more scrutiny this week in several committee hearings.
