Dayton heads to Washington trip for gov's meetings

A national forum for governors has Minnesota's Mark Dayton headed to Washington.

Gov. Dayton left Thursday to attend the National Governors Association Winter Meeting. During his five-day trip, he'll also attend events put on by the Democratic Governors Association.

President Barack Obama is due to host the governors for a dinner at the White House. Dayton will also meet with cabinet officials for agriculture and transportation.

The schedule will put Dayton out of the state when a new economic forecast is released on Monday. The document lays out the size of the budget hole lawmakers are tasked with fixing. The current shortfall estimate is $6.2 billion.

He is expected to offer reaction to the budget by phone.
