E. coli tainted hazelnuts found in another Minn. home

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture says recalled hazelnuts contaminated with E. coli have been found in the home of another sick Minnesota resident.

The in-shell hazelnuts were recalled Friday by DeFranco and Sons, a California-based nut and produce distributor. They were sold in stores in Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The nuts had sickened three people in Minnesota, three in Wisconsin, and one in Michigan.

Symptoms of this specific strain of E. coli include severe stomach cramps, fever and diarrhea. People usually become ill two to five days after eating contaminated food. Most people recover in five to 10 days, but infections can lead to kidney failure.

State officials say people who still have recalled hazelnuts should throw them away.
