Klobuchar wants new federal rules to curb gas prices

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is calling on the Federal Commodity Futures Trading Commission to take steps that she says would stabilize gas prices.

The Minnesota Democrat sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee, which oversees the commission. She said the commission could impose rules limiting speculative contracts in oil futures, but has yet to do so.

Klobuchar said such rules would reduce the volatility in gas prices.

"We all know while it's not the only problem going on here, we clearly want to have more of our own homegrown energy, there's also the issue of financiers on Wall Street playing games with the oil market," Klobuchar said. "They're not losing money; they're gaining it -- it's the customers and the people at the pumps losing money."

Klobuchar holds a press conference Monday at a Minneapolis gas station to urge the Futures Trading Commission to take action.
