Student, 15, missing in northern Wis. after hike

Authorities launched a search and rescue effort Sunday for a 15-year-old Minnesota girl who went on a nature hike after dinner but never returned to the dorm room at her school in far northern Wisconsin.

By Sunday afternoon, the Vilas County Sheriff's Department asked the public to help search for India Lodis Orman of Minneapolis.

According to the sheriff's department, Orman was last seen at the Conserve School, in Land O' Lakes, about 5 p.m. Saturday. It appears that she went on a hike after dinner, but didn't make it back to her dorm room.

School staff searched the school grounds and called law enforcement about 1 a.m. Sunday.

Several law enforcement agencies were working on the search effort Sunday. The sheriff's department asked citizens within a 15-mile radius of the school to check their property for Orman. Authorities also asked residents to check buildings, woodpiles, and look around and under vehicles and boats.

Orman is a white female, 5-feet 6-inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a powder blue North Face fleece jacket, blue corduroy pants, tan high snow boots with a fur border, black gloves, and a gray striped hat.

According to the school's website, Conserve School offers high school juniors a one-semester opportunity to focus on the environment and conservation. The school has a residential program and is located on a 1,200-acre wilderness campus.
