Nokomis library in Minneapolis to reopen

The Nokomis library in south Minneapolis reopens Saturday, after closing for two years of renovations and expansion. The library has expanded by about a third.

The Nokomis branch is one of the 41 libraries in the Hennepin County public library system. Library spokeswoman Sarah Rosenblum says the number of library visitors increases every year.

"Literally, they're coming in droves. they're coming to use our computers, they're coming to attend our story time, they're coming to recreational read, they're coming to do their homework, they're coming to look for job information, which is more crucial than ever in these hard economic times," she said.

Some of the improvements include a bigger children and teen area; a better collection of books, DVDs, and CDs; an interactive early literacy area for young children; 24 additional computers with Internet access; and wireless Internet access throughout the building.

The renovated library uses geothermal heating and cooling. A storm water management system treats storm water on site and controls overflow.

The Saturday reopening includes a 10 a.m. ribbon cutting, live music in the afternoon, and a scavenger hunt.
