Another cyclist struck by car near U of M

A University of Minnesota student was taken to the hospital Thursday night after his bicycle collided with a car. The crash follows a number of bike accidents in recent months near the U of M campus.

Minneapolis police say Baruk Ibrahim was going the wrong way in a bike lane when he was struck by a car at 10th Avenue and Fourth Street in Dinkytown. Sgt. Stephen McCarty said the driver waited for one cyclist who was also traveling in the wrong direction to pass but did not see Ibrahim.

McCarty is urging everyone to take caution while sharing the road.

"We're wanting everybody to be careful, observe their surroundings, and just drive and ride defensively," McCarty said. "With the warmer weather, there's more people out and about. We encourage them to go out, but we want them to be safe when they do go."

Ibrahim, 22, was treated at Hennepin County Medical Center for his injuries, which were not life threatening.
