Minn. Marine arrested on desertion allegation

A 20-year-old Austin man has been arrested on a warrant for deserting the U.S. Marine Corps.

Police Chief Brian Krueger says the man was cooperative when he was taken into custody late Thursday night. Krueger declined to discuss the case further.

An Austin Daily Herald report says the man is being held at the Mower County jail until arrangements are made for Marine Corps officials to pick him up.

Deserter status is applied to military personnel who have been absent without leave for 30 days or more. Punishment can include three years in jail, dishonorable discharge and forfeiture of pay.
