Labor department warns of contractor scams following storm

Minnesota's Department of Labor and Industry is warning Minneapolis storm victims to do background checks on contractors before signing any agreement to do repair work.

Spokesman James Honerman said homeowners can look up a contractor's license on the Department of Labor and Industry's website, or call to check the company's record.

"Most contractors are reputable, however some unscrupulous operators may attempt to take advantage of storm victims," Honerman said.

He said before a homeowner hires a contractor, they should contact the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry to learn if the contractor is licensed and to learn if there is possibly a history of disciplinary action with that contractor.

Honerman said the department tends to get a lot more phone calls after a major storm passes through an area.

The Department of Labor and Industry said red flags that could indicate unscrupulous contractors include high-pressure sales tactics, an unmarked truck or van, or unusually low prices.
