Dayton faces deadline to act on K-12 schools bill
Gov. Mark Dayton is expected to veto the biggest piece of the Legislature's budget on Tuesday - a spending package for public schools.
The Democratic governor has vowed to reject all the GOP Legislature's spending bills until he gets an overall budget deal.
Dayton has until midnight to act on the K-12 schools bill.
Republicans have urged him to sign it to resolve 40 percent of the state budget and give schools some security. Democrats have outlined objections ranging from cuts to a racial integration program to a prohibition on teacher strikes.
The regular session ended Monday without a deal. Dayton is expected to call a special session to finish a new two-year budget. If that's not in place by June 30, state government would shut down starting in July.
