In 2008, the non-profit charter-management organization Green Dot took over Alain Locke High school in L.A.. Locke is located in a tough inner-city neighborhood, and was a picture of academic failure when teachers secretly schemed for Green Dot to take control of their school. When a charter school replaces a traditional public school, there's often a house cleaning of existing teachers, administrators and even students. But Green Dot works with existing teachers' unions when it tries to turn around failing schools.

A new book chronicles Locke's transformation. It's called "Stray Dogs, Saints and Saviors: fighting for the soul of America's Toughest High School." Alexander Russo is the book's author and he joins host Stephen Smith on the American RadioWorks podcast this week.
