Southern Minn. school districts approve merger
Voters in two southern Minnesota school districts have decided the two districts should merge. The school districts of LeCenter and Montgomery-Lonsdale will combine to form a district of about 18 hundred students in an area between Lakeville and Mankato.
The referendum passed 1489-759, or 66 percent. But it also had to pass separately in each school district to be valid.
The vote in LeCenter was 551-501 and 938-258 in Montgomery-Lonsdale.
With passage of the referendum, all high school students will move to a new building under construction in Montogmery. The high school in LeCenter will close.
The consolidation takes effect next summer. It's the first in Minnesota in two years.
School leaders pushed for the consolidation saying the move would ease budget problems for both districts.
