Body of 6-year-old recovered from Mississippi

LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) - The body of a missing 6-year-old boy has been recovered from the Mississippi River in La Crosse County.

Sheriff's officials say a couple fishing near Goose Island in Running Slough found the body in about two feet of water and weeds Wednesday about 5 p.m. Junior Thao had been missing since Monday afternoon when he disappeared while swimming in the river off Pettibone Park. His body was found about six or seven miles away.

Dozens of family members have been at the beach this week as local agencies searched for the boy. The La Crosse Tribune says his parents thought their son was going to a pool with his siblings and didn't know they instead headed to the beach, which doesn't have a lifeguard.
