Corps: Be safe while boating near locks, dams
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is urging boaters to be safe near locks and dams when they take to the Mississippi River this Labor Day weekend.
The corps says currents around a lock and dam are dangerous. Sudden turbulence, undertows and reverse currents can make the waters hazardous.
Boaters should be familiar with the signs and buoys that mark restricted areas immediately upstream and downstream of navigation dams.
The corps also reminds boaters to be cautious when traveling through a lock and dam, and to observe all lock traffic signals.
Boaters must travel at no-wake speed when entering and leaving a lock.
