3rd Minneapolis teenager gunned down in past month

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old boy has been fatally shot in Minneapolis, the third teenager to be killed in the city in the past month.

Police were alerted to the shooting in north Minneapolis about 7:30 p.m. Monday by their gunshot location system called ShotSpotter. Officers found the teen had been shot and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene as family members gathered and wept.

Sgt. Stephen McCarty said Tuesday no suspects are in custody. Police didn't say whether Monday's shooting was related to the north side shooting deaths of 14-year-old Quantell Braxton on Aug. 20 and 13-year-old Ray'Jon Gomez on Aug. 24.

The shootings come as the city launched a summer initiative to raise awareness of youth violence and focus on ways to prevent it.
