Driver flees I-94/Highway 280 cone zone crash

A construction crew in St. Paul narrowly escaped injury overnight after a car hit some equipment on a construction project at the Interstate 94- Highway 280 interchange early Thursday morning.

State Patrol spokesman Eric Roeske said a sedan carrying at least three people was southbound on the freeway entrance ramp to westbound I-94 when it hit a dumpster and a water truck.

"There were two construction workers near that truck. They were knocked to the ground, but fortunately did not sustain any serious injuries at all," Roeske said.

The driver fled the scene of the crash and police searched the area but didn't find anyone, Roeske said. The car was rented.

The passengers in the car were injured and required medical help, but they claimed not to know who was driving the car. Police also found a loaded handgun in the vehicle.
