St. Paul toddler survives six-story plunge from apartment window

Report of injury
The Minnesota Department of Health says the spike in falls reported last year may just be a result of better documentation.

St. Paul police say a toddler is in serious condition after falling six stories from an apartment building on Sunday evening.

The accident happened on the City's North End, just about a dozen blocks north of the Capitol. Police spokesman Howie Padilla said the girl was taken to nearby Gillette Childrens Specialty Healthcare.

Padilla said there was an adult in the apartment when the girl fell, and that the incident appears to be an accident. He also said investigators will be looking into the incident further.

The accident comes just three months an 11 month-old girl from Arizona died in a nine-story fall from the Skyline Tower apartments in St. Paul.

Authorities said she was one of a group of children playing on a bed near an open window, and that a screen failed to stop her fall.

At least three other children have died in window falls in Minnesota in the last decade, according to data from the Minnesota Department of Health. They have also documented a steady rise in such incidents since 2002, but it isn't clear if that may simply be the result of more accurate reporting.
