Cargill to lay off up to 2,000

Wayzata-based Cargill will lay off up to 2,000 employees globally.

The company has a current workforce of 138,000 employees. Layoffs will cut about 1.5 percent of the workforce

Cargill spokeswoman Lisa Clemens said the layoffs come in response to the ongoing down economy.

"At this time, we don't know what the final number will be here in Minnesota," Clemens said. "We have about 6,600 employees here. We do know that this is global and the reduction will not be concentrated in any one city, country or region.

Clemens said most of the layoffs will be made over the next six months. Affected employees will receive severance and job counseling, she said.
