Cargill has resumed ground turkey production at a plant in Arkansas after a three-month shutdown because of contamination from an anti-biotic resistant form of salmonella.

The Minnesota-based company recalled some 36 million pounds of ground turkey last summer after salmonella linked to the product sickened more than 100 people and caused at least one death.

Cargill said one of four ground turkey production lines at the company's Springdale, Ark. plant has resumed operations. Three other lines will start later.

The company has instituted several safety measures at the plant to protect consumers, Cargill said. Among the steps, the Arkansas facility will used a high-pressure process to kill contaminants, something that's already used to treat some ground beef products.

Cargill also said its test sampling of the ground turkey will be the most rigorous in the industry.
