Sheriff warns of cracks on Lake of the Woods

Authorities say ice anglers should avoid the west side of Lake of the Woods unless they're going out with a resort or an expert who knows the conditions.

The Grand Forks Herald says conditions on the west side are treacherous because of cracks caused by warm temperatures and south winds.

Lake of the Woods County Sheriff Dallas Block says one crack was at least 100 yards wide Wednesday morning. He says it skimmed over and had a light covering of snow Friday morning that could give the illusion of safety.

Block says conditions are safer on the east side, and that's where anglers should target their efforts for now. And he says access should be limited to light vehicles like ATVs. He says no walleye is worth risking a life.
