Rochester high schoolers stay home after bomb threat

About 300 students stayed home from Century High School in Rochester Wednesday after officials received a bomb threat at the school.

Officials say a student saw a message on a bathroom stall Tuesday, saying the school was going to blow up Wednesday. A student reported the message to authorities, who did a sweep of the building and checked students' bags throughout the day.

"We checked every classroom, every area," said Rochester Schools Superintendent Michael Munoz. "We looked for things that were out of the ordinary. When you're dealing with high schools, it does make it more difficult, because they are larger facilities."

Last night, the district sent a message to parents alerting them to the threat, Munoz said.

"We do everything as a school to try to send a message that we're assuring the safety of their kids," Munoz said. "But bottom line, it's up to the parent to decide on what they feel is best for their child and we accept that and we understand that. That's their choice."

Munoz said Rochester police and school officials will continue to investigate the threat.

"You can have bomb threats all over the place, but you never know when it really could happen, so you have to treat all of them seriously," Munoz said.
