We've been bringing your reporting this week on the toll diabetes is taking here in Minnesota, and the research into its cure. The disease affects over 25 million people in the U.S., and one-third of adults here in Minnesota are either diabetic or considered pre-diabetic.

We thought we'd get some of the basics about the disease, and hear the clinical perspective from our Dr. Jon Hallberg. He's our regular medical analyst here on All Things Considered, and a physician in family medicine at the University of Minnesota.
